Get behind me, Satan

I can always tell when I'm starting to get closer to the center of God's will for my life.
How, you might ask.
Satan strengthens his attacks.
Instead of his taunting being a dull roar, it becomes a deep bellow.
He tears the thin veil that keeps his attacks at bay, and goes at it full throttle.
He pulls out the big guns, getting at the things that are closest to my heart.
This week he's attacked my heart.
My family.
My major.
My sleep.
My body.
My emotions.
My relationship with God.
When I seek after God, Satan seeks to tear me down in any way possible.

This time, the bad news isn't mine, however. It's his.
The thing is, I'm learning to rely on God's strength and not my own.
I've come to recognize my own weakness and my deep need for God's help in everyday life.
If I'd been relying on myself, I'd be devastated.
Like when you build a tower with building blocks, then knock it over.
Only this time, there was a net to catch all my pieces.

Satan sure is annoying.
I'll give him that.
He's persistent.
He isn't going to give up easily.
But I have my armor.
And I've been training.
Let's go.

2 Corinthians 10:1-6 -->
By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

Ephesians 10:11-16 -->
 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Modesty: A defense of self respect

Someone recently brought it up that the word modesty is in the bible less than 5 times, whereas the word lust is in the bible way more than 5 times.
While I can't say for certain, I'd guess she was trying to give a defense for girls dressing immodestly, somehow pinning it on the guys that it's their fault that they lust after us when we dress scandalously. Maybe the word modesty is a new one, but the idea has been around for a long time.
There are 3 huge reasons why we, as Godly women, dress modestly:
A) Respect God.
God did not give us a womanly figure to use it for power. God didn't give us a womanly figure to show off to all the men. God gave us sexuality for marriage - to share with our husband, and him alone.
God created us in His image (Genesis 2).
Our body is a temple of the holy spirit. If we truly believe in Christ, He dwells inside of us. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 2 Corinthians 6:16)
Everything we do should be glorifying to God. Bringing glory to God is ultimately our reason for existence. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
If we truly believe in the gospel and the holy sacrifice of Christ, we should desire to become more like Him.

B) Respect Guys.
Romans 14.
Women, if you understood men and how they think - there's no way you would dress the way you do.
Yes, lust is in the bible a lot. Why? Because it's something men, and even some women, struggle with. Here's the deal. Men are wired differently than us. Shocker. When I see a guy in shorter shorts, I think "gross, put some clothes on" and mentally put a shirt and longer pants on him. Unfortunately, guys don't have that mechanism - for them it's the opposite. When they see girls in provocative clothing, a low shirt, short shorts, etc - they start mentally undressing her before they can even blink. Many, if not all, of even the most Godly men I know struggle with this. This doesn't make them pigs, they don't wake up in the morning and think "man, I really want to demean women today so I'm going to think about sex a lot" in fact, Godly men pray for strength to guard their eyes when coming in contact with women. Godly men recognize our worth, and desire to respect us as their sisters in Christ.
Think about it this way: if you love chocolate, wouldn't it be hard for you to resist if a fondue fountain followed you wherever you went and you were told you aren't allowed to have any? If body image is something you struggle with, think about how often you think about your body. How often you think about food. Then amp it up a couple notches, and you have the temptation of lust for men.
If not just for guys in general, do it out of respect for your future husband. Don't you want him to be the only man who enjoys your body?
We should desire to build up our brothers in Christ. Dressing modestly isn't asking you to dress like a nun. It isn't asking you to wear turtlenecks. It isn't asking you to lock yourself in a room and never come out. It's asking you to think of others before yourself. It's asking you to exemplify Christ, and serve your brothers in Christ by helping to keep their eyes and minds pure.
1 Corinthians 8
Idolatry is not dead, unfortunately. It just masks itself in things other than golden calves. For men, sex is an idol. If immodesty causes my brothers in Christ to stumble, then look at this passage - what does it say? Oh right. We should dress modestly.
C) Respect Yourself.
If you aren't going to dress modestly for guys or for God, at least do it for yourself.
Proverbs 31 gives some good adjectives to describe a Godly woman: trustworthy, good, kind, intelligent, resourceful, giving, dignified, wise, fearful of the Lord.
I'm not claiming to fully understand a guy's mind - believe me, I don't, but I am saying that if you had any inkling of an idea of the magnitude of their struggle it'd have you running to your closet and throwing on the nun costume.
You can look cute and be modest. It can be done.

Modesty isn't just clothes. Modesty is a mindset. Modesty is the desire to keep our brothers in Christ from stumbling. You can be immodest while wearing a turtleneck and sweatpants. It's all the in way you present yourself. Be modest in your frame of mind as well, if you're truly seeking to help your brothers in Christ to not stumble, then you'll be much more aware of how what you wear and how you present yourself affects them. And if you don't know - ask them!

The type of guys who are attracted to immodest girls aren't the type of guys you want to date or marry, so why would you waste your time anyways?

Pray about this, women. Modesty isn't a list of do's and dont's -it's a mindset to respect God, others, and yourself.

I want to encourage you to check out this website: http://www.therebelution.com/modestysurvey/browse
It's a bunch of guys talking about modesty, and it's really helpful in understanding guys' struggle.

It shouldn't be "how much can I get away with?" but "how can I better show respect to God's creation - aka myself?" If you were standing next to a lion, you wouldn't see how close you could get without it biting your arm off, but you'd stay as far away as possible - we should view modesty in the same way.

Now you might be thinking: Yeah, yeah, but it's way too hard - I'm never going to get it right. Pray, woman, pray! God will help you, and eventually modesty will just be part of your daily routine.

Eyes Wide Open

Today I'm hyper aware of the things that break God's heart.
If you haven't read "the hole in our gospel", you should.
It's life changing.

It's so easy for me to hear about drought, starvation, and other terrible things and not let it faze me.
Sure, I might feel sad for a few minutes, maybe I'll even donate a few dollars to the cause, but then I easily fall back into my easy and comfortable life.
What if it was my best friend who was starving, dying of thirst, or being sold into sex slavery? What if it was my neighbor? What if it was someone from my church, school, or town?
Wouldn't I be outraged? Wouldn't it haunt my every waking thought? Wouldn't I do anything in my power to help them?
What does it matter that the children that are dying from lack of water and food live across the ocean. Out of sight out of mind - is that truly how I view it? That just because I can't see them suffering, somehow means it isn't happening?
Next time you hear a gripping story about the true living conditions abroad, instead of just shrugging it off - put yourself in their place. Think about it as if it's someone you know. See how much differently you view the situation when it becomes personal.
The fact is that for many people it is personal. It's their child that's thirsty. It's their little brother who's hungry. It's their best friend who was sold into sex slavery.
If you close your eyes, it doesn't mean it isn't happening.
If you turn a blind eye, it doesn't stop it.

Let your prayer be this: that you would see the world through God's eyes. Let your heart break for the things that break His heart.

Lives could be changed.

Love. Serve. Obey.

Love ~
Deuteronomy 6:5-->
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Leviticus 19:18 -->
Love your neighbor as yourself.

1 John 4:18-19 -->
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love because He first loved us.

Serve ~
Galatians 5:13 -->
For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Psalm 100:2 -->
Serve the Lord with gladness;
come before Him with joyful singing.

Obey ~
Acts 5:29 -->
But Peter and the apostles answered,
"We must obey God rather than men."

Quotes & The Hole in the Gospel

"If we all woke up every morning asking, 'How can I love, serve, and obey God today?' it might change everything - it might even change the world."
--> Richard Stearns, President of World Vision

"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."
--> Jim Elliot

"If Christ is Lord, then nothing He asks us to do is optional. His teachings become the operating system of our lives."
--> Richard Stearns

"Authentic faith, rooted in the heart of God, is expressed in deeds done to ease the pain of others; it is imbued with personal sacrifice, and it comes with a cost."
--> Richard Stearns

"It's not what you believe that counts; it's what you believe enough to do."
--> Gary Gulbranson

"Think for a moment of your life like a house with many rooms. Your faith cannot be just one more room in the house, equal with your job, your marriage, your political affiliation, or your hobbies. No, your faith must be like the very air you breathe, in every room of the house. It must permeate not just your "Sunday worship", or even your vocation and your behavior at home, but also your dealings with everyone around you - including the poor. That's how deep the commitment must be.
So what does God expect of you, then? Everything."
--> Richard Stearns

"God can't give you the blessings He has for you until you first put down the other things you are clutching in your hands."
--> Richard Stearns

"Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit grace that could be theirs" -- Jonah 2:8

"In most cases, God chose those deemed to be weak and imperfect by the world to do great things. Many of them were quite reluctant to serve."
--> Richard Stearns

"He could have used just a stick to save the nation of Israel. But He chose to use Moses - and his stick. All He required was for Moses to be available and obedient."
--> Richard Stearns

"God does nothing by happenstance. He doesn't wake up one day and say, 'I need to find someone to run World Vision; I wonder who I can find?' No, God is a God of order. He created us all for a purpose and envisioned our lives at the very beginning of time itself. He gave us each a unique personality and a set of aptitudes and placed use each in a particular family. Day by day, He brings key people into our lives and provides life experiences that shape us. God does al of thise with His purpose in mind, tailored to the individual - you and me."
--> Richard Stearns

"I am a little pencil in the hand of God who is sending a love letter to the world."
--> Mother Theresa

"Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God."

Filthy Rags & Righteousness

So often I unconsciously feel like God owes me.
That somehow, or for some reason, I should be given a prize.
I'm a good kid.
I eat my vegetables.
I do my best to follow His commands.
I read my bible and pray.
How often I feel I'm doing God a favor or deserve praise for being good.
Sometimes I think of the things I've given up in order to follow God.
No drugs.
No drinking.
No sex before marriage.
The list goes on.
So often I come before God and remind Him of my obedience.
As if I deserve a reward for being good.
As if I'm suffering because I've given up these things.

Here's the reality check: God didn't give me His commands to make me miserable.
He didn't sit in heaven thinking of ways to make me unhappy.
The truth of the matter is this:
He made the earth, don't I believe that He knows how I can best live the life He's given me?
He made me.
He designed this world.
He created it.
I'm 100% sure He knows how to have the best, happiest life there is to live on earth.
He knows that true satisfaction doesn't come from drinking, being high, or sketchy boyfriends.
True satisfaction can only be found in the arms of Christ.
And on the flip side, my works are like filthy rags in comparison to His holiness.
Who am I to gripe about how "hard" it is for me to attempt to live a righteous life?
Did Jesus not come to this world and live one?
God didn't think up a bunch of ridiculous rules to purposefully spite me for following Him.
He truly desires my happiness and sanctification.
Happiness can only be found in the glorification of God.
Sometimes it isn't going to be easy - but these times remind us that this earth is not our home.
God works for the good of those who follow Him in all things. (Rom 8:28)

Isaiah & Christ

Wow.
Sometimes Jesus just dazzles me.

Isaiah 62:5
"As a young man marries a young woman,
   so will your Builder marry you;
as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,
   so will your God rejoice over you."

Isaiah 61:10
"I delight greatly in the LORD;
   my soul rejoices in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
   and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,
as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,
   and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels."

These last couple days I've just been dwelling on what that day would look like.
The moment when I'd walk down the aisle to be received by my Savior.
To see the tears in His eyes as He would take in His creation.

Would I make it down the aisle?
Would I run into His arms, and He'd sweep me off the ground and spin me around?
Would I fall at His feet, and kiss them through my tears?
Tears of unworthiness.
Fully aware of His holiness.
As I'd walk down the aisle, would my white dress be splattered with all different colors of paint - symbolizing all the sins I've committed?
By the time I'd make it down the aisle, I'd be dripping in paint.
Not worthy to even step near the pristine condition He'd be in.
But then, He'd hand me a white robe,
and gently wash away the paint residue.
His unconditional love floors me every day.
His mercies are new each morning.
In comparison to His glory, my sin is just so much more evident.

His forgiveness is astounding.
His beauty is breathtaking.
His mercy is unbelievable.
His love is dazzling.
He is majestic, and Holy beyond all measure.

Intimacy and Christ.
Wow. It doesn't get any better.
